Mein Statement zum Unfall in Altenberg Gerne möchte ich ein Statement zu meinem schweren Unfall am 13.02.2024 posten. Für viele von euch ist es vermutlich nicht mehr allzu präsent, aber für mich ist es immer noch allgegenwärtig. Jeden Tag werde ich durch die Therapien, die Einschränkungen im Alltag oder die riesigen Narben, die meinen Körper nun zeichnen, daran erinnert. Meine Ziele sind erstmals ohne Gehstock laufen zu können und zu versuchen, den Weg zurück in den Sport zu finden. Ich habe lange darüber nachgedacht, ob ich etwas schreiben soll oder nicht. Letztendlich bin ich zum Entschluss gekommen, mich zu äussern, da mich die Situation stärker belastet, als ich mir eingestehen möchte. Ich habe diverse Fragen, auf die ich bis heute keine vernünftige Antwort erhalten habe.
My Statement regarding the Bobsleigh Accident in Altenberg. I would like to post a statement about my serious accident on 13.02.2024. For many of you it is probably no longer very present, but for me it is still, and always present. I am reminded of it every day by the therapies, the restrictions in everyday life or the huge scars that now mark my body. My goals in the first instance are to be able to walk without a stick for the first time and to try to find my way back into sport. I thought long and hard about whether I should write something or not. In the end, I decided to speak out because the situation is weighing more heavily on me than I would like to admit. I have many questions to which I have not yet received a sensible or suitable answer.
Aber zunächst einmal, was ist genau passiert? Unser Viererbob ist im Training auf der Bahn in Altenberg im unteren Bahnteil gestürzt und ich bin aus dem Bob gefallen. Der auf der Seite liegende Bob schlitterte mit meinen drei Teamkollegen ungebremst weiter und da die Bahn im Zielbereich bergauf geht, rutschte er in der Bahn zurück, wo er mich überfuhr. Neben diversen Rippenbrüchen, einem gebrochenen Schulterblatt, abgeschlagenen Muskeln am Brustkorb, erheblichem Blutverlust und einem Lungenflügel, der sich mit Blut gefüllt hat, hat es mich vor allem im Hüftbereich schlimm erwischt. Im Bericht steht, dass die Wunde 35 cm x 50cm gross war. Der Hüftknochen war ausgekugelt und sichtbar. Mein Bein hing lediglich noch an etwas Haut und einigen Muskelsträngen. Nur dank der hervorragenden Reaktion der Rettungskräfte vor Ort und der unglaublichen Arbeit der Ärzte in Dresden bin ich am Leben und hab noch beide Beine. Dafür bin ich unendlich dankbar!
But first of all, what exactly happened? Our four-man bobsleigh crashed in the lower part of the track during World Cup training in Altenberg and I was ejected from the bobsleigh. The bob [which was lying on its side] skidded along with my three teammates inside. Unable to brake, the track goes uphill in the finish area and with nothing to stop it, the sled slid back down the track where it ran over me. Various broken ribs, a broken shoulder blade, severed muscles on my chest, considerable blood loss and a lung that filled with blood, and I was particularly badly damaged in the hip area. The medical report states that the wound in my hip area was 35cm x 50cm in size. The femur was dislocated at the hip, and visible. Actually, my leg was only hanging on by a bit of skin and a few muscle fibres. It is only thanks to the excellent reactions of the emergency services on site and the incredible work of the doctors in Dresden that I am alive and still have both legs. I am eternally grateful for that!
Hauptsächlich beschäftigt mich die Frage, WESHALB es so weit kommen musste? Bereits am Morgen vor unserem Sturz gab es an derselben Stelle einen schweren Sturz des Teams Lochner. Auch sie haben einen Anschieber aus dem Bob verloren, der bewusstlos in der Bahn liegen geblieben ist. Nur mit viel Glück konnten die Teamkollegen, die noch im Schlitten waren, das Zurückrutschen verhindern und so ihren Kollegen vor einem Überfahren retten. Bereits sie intervenierten bei der Bahn und äusserten, dass genügend Leute an diesem Ort stehen müssen, die im Falle eines Sturzes helfen können. Allerspätestens zu dem Zeitpunkt hätte man doch sehen müssen, was passieren kann. Ich kann einfach nicht nachvollziehen, warum man auf den Vorfall am Morgen nicht eingegangen ist und nicht alles darangesetzt hat, eine Wiederholung zu verhindern.
The main question that concerns me is WHY it had to come to this? The morning before our crash, Team Lochner had already had a serious crash in the same place. They also lost a crew member from the bobsleigh, who was left unconscious in the track. It was only due to great fortune that the teammates who remained in the sled were able to prevent them from sliding back and thus save their colleague from being run over. Following this incident they already had discussed with the track workers that there must be enough people in the area to help in the event of crash. At that point in time, at the latest, it should be clear what could happen in this situation. I simply cannot understand why the incident in the morning was not dealt with and why every effort was not made to prevent a recurrence.
Gemäss Statement des Bahnchefs trifft die Bahn keine Schuld und er forderte eine generell bessere Ausbildung der Athleten/Athletinnen sowie schmalere Kufen, damit die Bobs nicht mehr ganz so schnell sind. Wie eine bessere Ausbildung der Athleten/Athletinnen verhindern kann, dass gestürzte Schlitten zurück rutschen, ist nicht nur mir ein Rätsel und wenn sogar Piloten wie Lochner und Vogt stürzen, hat das meiner Meinung nach nichts mit der Ausbildung zu tun (zwei der besten Piloten auf der Tour). Meiner Meinung nach müssten im Auslauf gut ausgebildete Bahnarbeiter mit entsprechendem Hilfsmaterial postiert werden, die ein Zurückrutschen unter allen Umständen verhindern können. Wäre dies in einem Ausnahmefall nicht möglich, sollten Hilfskräfte einen bewusstlosen Athleten aus der Bahn nehmen können.
According to the track manager, the track is not at fault and he called for better training of the athletes in general as well as narrower runners so that the bobsleighs are no longer quite so fast. Exactly how better training of the athletes can prevent sleds from sliding back when they crash is a mystery to me. Even pilots of the calibre of Lochner and Vogt crash, in my opinion this has nothing to do with training (two of the best pilots on the tour). In my opinion, well-trained track workers with the appropriate support material should be stationed in the outrun to prevent a sled sliding back under all circumstances. If this is not possible in an exceptional case, helpers should be able to remove an unconscious athlete from the track.
Auch geforderte Anpassungen am Material, damit die Schlitten nicht so schnell sind, kann ich nur bedingt verstehen. Da wäre es viel einfacher, die Bahn nicht so schnell zu präparieren. Im besagten ersten WeltcupTraining wurde die Bahn jedoch bereits unglaublich schnell präpariert. Nach unserem Unfall wurde die Bahn deutlich verlangsamt. War den Betreibern eine schnelle Zeit etwa wichtiger als das Wohlergehen der Athleten? Stürze passieren, auch wenn die Bahn oder das Material deutlich langsamer sind. Zwar kommen Stürze in unserem Sport vor, doch der vorliegende Sturz passierte nur und war so heftig, weil die Bahn für einen ersten Trainingslauf viel zu schnell präpariert war. Es kommt nur selten vor, dass ein Anschieber bei einem Sturz aus dem Schlitten fällt. Es geht mir zudem vor allem darum, was nach unserem Sturz passiert ist oder was eben seitens Bahn unterlassen wurde.
I can also only somewhat understand the suggested adjustments to the material so that the sleds are not so fast. It would be much simpler to not prepare the track to be so fast. However, in the first World Cup training session, the track was already prepared to be incredibly fast. After our accident, the track was slowed down considerably. Was a fast time more important to the operators than the well-being of the athletes? Crashes do happen in our sport, even if the track or the equipment is much slower. But the crash in question only happened and was so severe because the track was prepared far too quickly for a first training run. It is rare for a crew member to fall out of the sled in a crash. I'm mostly interested in what happened after our accident, or what the track failed to do.
Weshalb wurde das „Sicherheitskonzept“ der Bahn Altenberg von der IBSF bewilligt? Nach meinem Verständnis sieht das Konzept vor, dass die gestürzten Schlitten zurückrutschen und am tiefsten Punkt aus der Bahn genommen werden. Jedoch besteht immer ein gewisses Risiko, dass bei einem Sturz jemand aus dem Schlitten fällt und in der Bahn liegen bleibt. Ich frage mich darum, ob hier ein solcher Unfall einfach in Kauf genommen wurde? Eine hundertprozentige Sicherheit kann in unserem Sport nicht garantiert werden. Dies ist mir und jedem Athleten bewusst. Doch hier wurde meiner Meinung nach doch extrem fahrlässig gehandelt. Vor allem wenn man bedenkt, dass nach dem schweren Sturz des Teams Lochner am Morgen nichts unternommen wurde und die Verantwortlichen keinerlei Reaktionen oder Änderungen vorgenommen haben.
Why was the “safety concept” of the Altenberg track approved by the IBSF? As I understand it, the concept provides for the crashed sleds to slide back down the outrun and then can be removed from the track at the lowest point. However, there is always a certain risk that someone will fall out of the sled and remain on the track. I therefore ask myself whether such an accident was simply accepted here? One hundred percent safety cannot be guaranteed in our sport. I and every athlete are aware of this. However, I believe this was an extremely negligent act. Especially when you consider that nothing was done after Team Lochner's serious crash in the morning and those responsible did not react or make any changes.
Bis jetzt habe ich von der Bahn Altenberg nichts gehört und auch von der IBSF habe ich erst nach wiederholter Kritik etwas von den Athletensprecherinnen gehört. Bei diesem Umgang entsteht der Eindruck - auch wenn es vielleicht nicht so ist - dass es ihnen absolut gleichgültig ist! Oder wie soll ich dieses Verhalten verstehen? Mir ist es wichtig, dass die Athleten/Athletinnen über diese Dinge Bescheid wissen. Ich hoffe extrem fest, dass die Bahn Altenberg sowie die IBSF wenigstens ihre Schlüsse aus dem Unfall ziehen und die Sicherheit drastisch verbessert wird! Wenn ich im Dezember das Rennen in Altenberg mitverfolgen werde und ein Schlitten stürzt, hoffe ich, diesen nicht zurückrutschen zu sehen. Falls die Sicherheit aber nicht verbessert wird und man so weitermachen will wie bis anhin, würde ich mich schon fragen, welchen Stellenwert die Gesundheit der Athleten/Athletinnen für die Verantwortlichen hat und ob ich unter diesen Umständen wirklich wieder Bobfahren möchte.

I have not heard anything from the Altenberg track. I have only heard from the IBSF athletes spokeswoman after my repeated criticism. This response, or lack thereof gives the impression - even though it may not be the case - that they don't care at all! How else should I interpret this behaviour? It is important to me that the athletes know and understand about these events. I really hope that the Altenberg track and the IBSF at least draw their conclusions from the accident and drastically improve safety! When I watch the race in Altenberg in December and if a sled crashes, I hope I don't see it slide back.If safety is not improved and they want to carry on as before, I would ask myself how important the health of the athletes is to those responsible and whether I would really want to go bobsleighing again under these circumstances.

We hope that the IBSF and other national federations fight for better safety protocols. Altenberg hosts the first World Cup of the 2024/25 season and the eyes of the sliding world will be on them. We hope they take their responsibility to athlete safety seriously.
Having said that, to the emergency services who responded so effectively to save Sandro's life, (we wish you weren't needed that day) but a huge, huge thank you.
